Brief Report 1999
March 10th
The Bay Area RTYC, in conjunction with the Tibetan community at large, observed the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.
April 25th
The Bay Area RTYC launched a peaceful demonstration in front of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco to call upon the release of the 11th Panchen Lama, the then eight year old second-highest Tibetan religious leader whose where about continue to remain unknown since his abduction by the Chinese government in 1995. The event was also marked by a widespread distribution of posters, pamphlets and other information materials on the plight of the world's youngest prisoner of conscience.
April 30th
The Bay Area RTYC commemorated the first year of martyrdom of Thupten Ngodup, the Tibetan activist who had self-immolated himself the year before in protest against China's continued occupation of Tibet. The first exile martyr's supreme sacrifice was marked by a modest function, which was also attended by the executive members of the Tibetan Association of Northern California.
October 10th
The Bay Area RTYC commemorated the 30th Year of the founding of the Tibetan Youth Congress. With Kalon Pema Chinjor, minister of the exile Tibetan government's Security Department, as the chief guest, an elaborate function was held for the first time in San Francisco, during which the Tibetan minister called for greater participation from Tibetan youth in their freedom struggle. He lauded the efforts by the TYC's central executive committee in Dharamsala and the Bay Area RTYC in inspiring such contribution from the Tibetan youth. The occasion was rendered a great success also by the collaboration from Mr. Dhonyo Tenzin, President of Tibetan Association of Northern California, and the Tibetan community here at large.
October 22nd
The Bay Area RTYC organized a prayer gathering to pay homage to Martyr Tashi Tsering, the Tibetan freedom activist who was beaten to death by Chinese police in Lhasa after he had successfully lowered a Chinese flag in protest against China's occupation of Tibet. The Tibetan martyr's supreme sacrifice in the midst of China's commemoration of the 50th year of the founding of the People's Republic of China remains an act of great defiance against China's continued occupation of Tibet and its brutal oppression of the Tibetan people.
December 10th
The Bay Area RTYC, in conjunction with Tibetan Association of Northern California, marked the World Human Rights Day by staging a peaceful protest at San Francisco Civic Center against China's continued violation of all human rights and the Fundamental freedoms of the Tibetan people inside Tibet.
